Welcome to the Harbury Society
We are a group of friendly people with wide-ranging interests. The Society offers monthly talks from September to April on a diverse range of subjects and outings to various places of interest from May to August.
In the 1970’s, one of Harbury’s iconic properties, the Manor House in Park Lane, was threatened with demolition to make way for a housing development. It was due to the efforts of a group of campaigning villagers that the Manor House was saved and their efforts became the basis of the formation of the Harbury Society. This must be one of the most worthwhile achievements, as the loss of the Manor would have deprived the village of something incredibly special. The Society was set up in order to fight the loss of Harbury heritage and has continued to do so.
The Society was founded on 7th November 1973 when the title Harbury Society was agreed.
The Original Aims of the Harbury Society
To promote an interest in the history of the village, through research and the collection of pictorial and documentary material.
Carry out regular surveillance of matters relating to the environment of the village and the surrounding countryside, and to study community amenities.
To undertake a survey of village buildings with the intent to have those of architectural merit ‘Listed’.
The Committee also agreed to begin research into the history of the village and to collect old photographs of Harbury and Harburians for a money raising exhibition in the Wight School.
